Aerial yoga was developed in 2006 by Michelle Dortignac and it blends traditional yoga with elements of dance and gymnastics, using a hammock suspended from the ceiling to support, deepen, or modify poses, allowing for gravity-defying movements, spinal decompression, and enhanced strength, flexibility, and balance.
The hammock acts as a prop, making challenging postures more accessible and adding unique sensations, from gentle support to full inversions, promoting physical and mental well-being. We utllize 2 kinds of hammocks at Body Soul Being - a silk and a trapeze - they lend themselves to different postures and moods.
Our approach to aerial yoga is to invite the element of play into the practice of yoga and utilize the hammock as just another support like a bolster or a block.
Our aerial yoga classes will challenge you to learn something new while giving you the opportunity to move your body in planes it typically wouldn’t with solely a mat based practice.
-
Yes, we do offer beginner classes as well as any modifications for students of all levels.
-
Our silk hammocks can support up to 2000 lbs of shear force. Force applies to physics and not just body weight. Force refers to how much tension and pressure is being placed on the fabric. The hammocks have a limit of approximately 275-300 lbs of body weight given the type of movements our classes implement.
Getting in and out of the hammock doesn’t require a lot of force (or effort) and neither does simply relaxing back into it. Some of our aerial offerings do not require participants to change positions or move around, therefore the hammock should be able to support any body type or experience level.
We strive to be inclusive of all beings whether they be great or small, petite or tall, beginner or advanced. Ideally, we’d love to witness everyone enjoying an aerial experience, however you’re more than welcome to join us and practice on a yoga mat. -
Yes, as long as the parent or guardian is present. We do offer occasional pop up events that are specifically for younger students and even for babies.
